95 | Vigna Ganger Pinot Noir Riserva 2015
"The Mazon vineyard sits about 370 meters above sea level in an unusual microclimate, and this 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger has soaked up every bit of the sunshine to hit that gently sloping southwestern exposure. There is a lot of dark saturation and density here, with a feel of warm-vintage ripeness and volume. This wine offers soft and amazing textural richness for a Pinot Nero, which tends to be more linear and sharply contoured than this expressions is. The Ganger subzone of the Mazon (or Mazzon) vineyards is known for its deep soils with thick clay at the bottom and looser limestone topsoils. This is Pinot Noir clone 777. A mere 2,350 bottles were made."
93 | Trattmann Pinot Noir Riserva 2016
"The 2016 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Trattmann has meatier notes than the Mazon and a softer layering of that ripe fruit. It shows a horizontal delivery of aromas as opposed to a vertical one. It is a broad and thick red with tar and spice tones, pairing well with a roast and potatoes. Some of the fruit used here comes from the famed Mazzon subzone (known for its excellent Pinot Nero), and the rest is sourced from the Pinzon area with a slightly warmer microclimate in comparison. Some 30,000 bottles were made."
