Philosophy &
Sustainability

Philosophy

We have two main objectives: the first is to revalue historical grape varieties from our area (Vernatsch, Pinot Bianco & Pinot Noir),  and the other is to create wines with character, using international grape varieties (Chardonnay & Sauvignon), but still tied in some way to our area; we do this while respecting the time periods dictated by nature.

Our work means that, in a natural manner, we can transfer our beneficial intentions to the very spirit of our wines and while we use the very latest technology has to offer, we also take care to make sure that our new future maintains close ties with our past.

Sustainability

From a deep conviction for a sustainable agriculture, we want to further develop our wine production - from the soil to the people - towards our claim for sustainability, in order to enable also in future a production of high-quality wines of regional origin.

Soil

  • Soil loosening & green manure through sowings of leguminous plants.
  • Use of bio-compost (organic fertilizer) on poor soils.
  • No use of mineral fertilizers.
  • Reduction of water by using water-saving drip irrigation.

 Viticulture

  • Plant protection following the minimum priciple: reduction of the number and frequency of chemical plant protection measurements.
  • Usage of organic products and ecological methods (e.g. the sex confusion pheromones in combatting the vine moth).

 People

  • Training and consulting of our wine growing families and employees.

 Wine

  • Reduction of energy consumption by 50% thanks to in-house photovoltaic system.
  • Additional energy-savings due to1) storage of the wines and bottles in underground cellars, and 2) energy-saving LED technology for lighting.
  • Use of unbleached natural corks
  • Bottling of all wines in Light-Weight bottles á 410g produced especially for Cantina Girlan. According to independent calculations by the Ökoinstitut Südtirol, this will reduce CO2 emissions by 29.76%. For comparison: this corresponds to 0.6 hectares of forest or 1.37 million kilometres driven by car per year.
