"[...] Il grande altopiano di Cornaiano si staglia come una grande terrazza affacciata sul corso dell’Adige e sulla città di Bolzano, fittamente vitato e quasi protetto alle spalle dalla pendenza boschiva del Monte di Mezzo. Nel piccolo borgo ha sede la storica cooperativa Girlan, oggi guidata da Oscar Lorandi con Gerhard Kofler alla direzione tecnica, negli ultimi anni capace di scalare la qualità e valorizzare il più nordico dei suoi areali. Ancora una volta il Pinot Nero Trattmann ha sbalordito la giuria per una versione che esprime al meglio il frutto di media fusione delle uve 2022, la matrice del frutto è nera, la tessitura profuma di officinale e di sottobosco. In bocca rivela buona densità e il sorso si allunga con decisione sulla spinta dell’acidità. Gschleier ’23 si muove su un registro più essenziale, mettendo in luce dei profumi di frutto selvatico e spezie che ritroviamo al palato, salino e piacevolmente ruvido."

This is not an easy wine due to the filigreed complexity. The nose is layered with vibrant strawberries, cinnamon, licorice, thyme and red currants. Full-bodied with refreshing acidity and weight. Good concentration and tension in the long finish, which shows touches of graphite. Drinkable now, but best from two to three years and at its peak in ten years.

Mazon is a special subzone in Alto Adige with a long tradition of Pinot Noir cultivation. This estate now makes two top-end Riserva selections to highlight the individual identities of the mountain's various slopes dedicated to this variety. The Girlan 2021 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Mazon Vigna Ganger (in heavy glass with 2,136 bottles produced) shows concentration and power over a relatively full-bodied style. The wine matures in barrique (70% new oak) for 18 months and spends six months in 1,200-liter casks to complete its slow integration. It shows dark fruit and blackcurrant with hints of mountain herb and dried orange peel. The oak influence plays out mostly in terms of the wine's medium- to full-bodied texture.

In a heavy glass bottle, the Girlan 2021 Alto Adige Riserva Chardonnay Curlan is a wine that borrows on its Alpine environment with soils of glacier origin for brightness and verticality of aromas. It also borrows from sophisticated winemaking, with 12 months in barrique, eight months in stainless steel and 12 months in bottle for a creamy, medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel. It's a lovely wine from a stellar vintage. Production is limited to 2,100 bottles.

Here is a second Riserva expression of Pinot Noir by Girlan. The 2021 Alto Adige Riserva Pinot Noir Curlan (in a heavy glass bottle with only 3,023 made) draws its fruit from a high-elevation site at 500 meters in elevation on glacial till soils. These conditions allow for slow ripening and increased complexity of flavors. On the Pinot Noir scale, this wine is hearty and concentrated, with blackcurrant and savory spice over a medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel. It ages in barrique for 19 months, with 70% new oak, and finishes off with a few months in stainless steel before going into bottle. Compared to the Mazon Vigna Ganger, the Curlan is more powerful in terms of tannins and fruit weight.

The Girlan 2022 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Riserva Flora is a beautiful wine that faithfully follows the playlist of a grape that tends to offer more in terms of textural weight than it does aromatic intensity. A somewhat neutral bouquet of stone fruit, pear and crushed stone is followed by plush fruit weight. The wine matures in oak for 12 months, followed by a close-down period of six months in stainless steel. Production is 6,700 bottles.

The Girlan 2023 Alto Adige Chardonnay Flora offers a cool-climate interpretation of this French grape with a mid-weight, creamy texture and varietal aromas of stone fruit and poached pear. The verticality and brightness of the wine is preserved carefully thanks to growing conditions that include mineral-rich soils and glacial till.

The Girlan 2023 Alto Adige Vernatsch Gschleier Alte Reben is a lean-bodied red with a racy and spicy side that recalls white pepper, forest berry, moss and blue flower. This wine matures in botte grande for nine months for a smooth mouthfeel and integrated appeal. This hot-vintage wine has a point of sweetness on the close. This is a popular wine seen on the wine lists of local restaurants and taverns. Production is 18,000 bottles. Production is 15,000 bottles.

Il concetto di terroir è ben rappresentato dalla filosofia produttiva della cantina, una cooperativa nata nel 1923 e che oggi conta circa 200 soci. Qui, infatti, dopo aver individuato le varietà maggiormente espressive, si è data loro la giusta collocazione sui suoli dell’Oltradige e della Bassa Atesina. Dare risalto ai cru del territorio è, infatti, l’obiettivo che l’azienda intende perseguire anche nei prossimi anni, introducendo nuove declinazioni del pinot nero, dello chardonnay e della vernatsch per identificarsi sempre più attorno a queste tre cultivar. Vendemmie manuali, pressature a grappolo intero, vinificazioni per gravità e affinamento su fecce fini sono alcuni strumenti a disposizione dei tecnici per valorizzare ciò che di buono offrono le uve.

"Die Kellereigenossenschaft wurde 1923 in einem historischen Bauernhof aus dem 16. Jahrhundert gegründet. Hinter diesen Mauern und in den weit verzweigten Kellergängen verbirgt sich jetzt feinste Technologie. Heute sind es rund 200 Winzerfamilien, die 215 Hektar bewirtschaften. 2006 legte der Kellermeister Gerhard Kofler den Grundstein für die heutige außerordentliche hohe Blauburgunder-Kompetenz mit Lagen um den Trattmannhof bei Mazon, womit Girlan inzwischen in der Champions League der internationalen Weinszene spielt."

"[...] Eine persönliche Anmerkung gleich vorneweg. Ein Wein der Kellerei Girlan ist uns über die Jahre regelrecht ans Herz gewachsen. Der Pinot Noir Trattmann hat uns auch in diesem Jahr wieder erobert. Allerdings nicht ohne Vorbedingung: Er braucht im Moment viel Luft, bitte dekantieren. Aber dann zeigt er eine leichte Kirschnote, engmaschiges Tannin, ist fest, tiefgründig, mineralisch-würzig, geprägt von elegant-sehniger Struktur. Ein Wein, der jedes Abendessen zum Fest werden lässt und der ob seiner grandiosen Qualität immer noch sehr fair bepreist ist. Überhaupt sind die Burgundersorten eine Stärke vom Team um Oscar Lorandi, dem Betriebsleiter, der zusammen mit Kellermeister Gerhard Kofler die Geschicke der Kellerei seit Jahren bestimmt. Vor allem Koflers Bewunderung für die großen Weine aus dem Burgund hinterlässt seit Jahren einen spürbaren Stempel bei den Weinen der Genossenschaft. Die Pinot Bianco Riserva Flora ist das geeignete Beispiel, um zu erschmecken, was Kofler sucht."
